The organisation of the GoldRiver XXV is now ramping up with the approach of spring (arrival on the east coast of Vancouver Island, +12C yesterday). I have made contact with Mr. Ken Smith, Gold River municipal campground host who has confirmed our group campsite booking from Thurs afternoon 26 June to the morning of Tuesday 1 July (Canada Day).
You will have a number of options to choose from that I will outline here.
The GoldRiver XXV event bivouac. Located on the Gold River municipal campground - Group site. The campground is 5km out of town on Mill Rd. The bivouac will be open from Thursday afternoon 26 June to Tuesday morning 1 July and includes access to the showers/toilet facilities at the Ucona Sportsfield. The cost of this is $100 payable through the Shop tab on this website. Sorry there are no deductions for late arrival/early departure as I won’t be keeping a log of when people arrive and depart.
Individual camping spaces at the Gold River campground - if you are bringing a RV or a family and you want a little more privacy. Please book these directly with Ken Smith, camp host by phoning 250-283-7969. I understand the cost of this will be somewhere between $20 and $25 per place per night (final price yet to be decided by the village council). Please do not try to book RV sites through me. Phone Ken on the number above.
If you insist on free camping, there is a provincial in-the-woods campsite at Muchalat Lake, about 15km north of Gold River. This is a “first come first serve” campsite and has minimal services.
There are two motels in town, the Ridgeview Motor Inn and the Baymont by Wyndham. Both can be easily found by an internet search. Again, book these directly not through me.
There are Airbnb short term rental properties in town - through the usual platforms.
Catering. There will be no bivouac cookhouse this year. If the wildfire situation permits, there will be a campfire at the bivouac. Also you will be able to camp cook.
Breakfasts can be purchased from the Uptown Cappuccino cafe each morning before your starts.
Evening dinners can be bought from the Ridge Pub and also with prior table booking from the Sea And Field Bistro (250-283-2005).
Mr Kim’s Gold River Deli (250-283-2554) can supply you with whatever you have forgotten to bring.
There is a liquor shop, Gold River Liquor Express (250-283-6806) for your booze requirements and if pot is your intoxicant of choice (legal in Canada remember) the Green Gold Cannabis Company can supply you (250-283-0137).
Petrol comes from the Shell station 500 Muchalat Dr. No ethanol-free though.
If you have an electric car, there is a charging station at the top of the town by the visitor information centre.
