Press Release. The Great Canadian (dualsport and adventure bike) Roadbook Rally - GoldRiver XXV

PRESS RELEASE

THE GREAT CANADIAN ROADBOOK RALLY - The GoldRiver XXV

27 June - 1 July 2025

Preparations are at an advanced stage for the fourth edition of the GoldRiver motorcycle navigation trial, a three day cross-country rallysport event centred on the Strathcona village of Gold River.

The event has been dubbed “The Great Canadian (dualsport and adventure bike) Roadbook Rally” and is the only event of its kind in British Columbia (possibly in Canada…?).

The event is a road legal, navigation challenge for licensed and insured riders of road-registered cross country motorcycles.

Thirty or so riders from Canada and the USA will ride three routes over three days totalling 700km, riding through 500 waypoints (direction instructions) and 70 GPS timing gates. The routes follow some of the public highway-designated gravel roads of the Sutton, Newcastle and Prince of Wales mountain ranges of the north of Vancouver Island.

Jonathan Binnington, event organiser explains:

“ This form of motorsport is not a racing or speed event but is comparable to orienteering in athletics with set, legal, average speeds and navigation challenges.

The event uses rally-motorsport roadbook navigation instructions (basically a long list of left/right/straight on directions with distance measurements) and a GPS satellite timing system to monitor riders speeds.  It is as close as you can get in Canada to Dakar or WRC Rally without breaking the law!    Riders can also expect to see some of the hidden corners of the north of the island and some of the wildlife too…”

In addition to being a fantastic motorcycle event, the GoldRiver XXV brings motorsport tourism to the North Island in a low-impact and eco-friendly manner by setting the routes exclusively over established road networks and tourism dollars to the communities of the North Island”.

The event has not yet reached its capacity limit and remains open to road registered, licensed and insured riders of cross country motorcycles who wish to participate in competitive motorcycle Motorsport that doesn’t cost a fortune.   Entries can be found on the event website at
