This year’s moto-TSD rally brings a number of new developments to the VIME format that has been developed over the past five years. The event has a new bivouac location at The Sayward Valley Resort, www.saywardvalleyresort.com 1546 Sayward Rd BC, V0P 1RO, just off Highway 19.

Full On Lighting, suppliers of high intensity helmet-mounted riding lights will be co-hosting the nighttime event opening Prologue on Thursday evening 2 July. The Prologue has the function of setting the start order for the Day1 route. The difficulty faced by rallies is how to fairly arrange the start order of the participating riders so that the first rider isn’t at an instant disadvantage having to lead the way…?

The Prologue will start at dusk on Thursday evening. Full On Lighting will have a number of demonstration helmet lights for riders to use to maximise their lighting of the route, which will be an 80Km time/speed/distance navigation trial. The winner of the Prologue will get to choose their start position. The rest of the field will start in reverse Prologue finishing order ie the slowest first. Not only will this seed the field, but it is also expected that the field will be kept together over three days of very long routes (200+km each day).

Prior to the Prologue, a training route has been published by VIME called “The Thursday Loosener”…. It is available here as a roadbook, a Gaia route. If you want the route as a GPX, save the Gaia route on a demo version of Gaia and extract the GPX as a file…

This route is a representative introduction to the technical standard of the North Island gravel highways, an opportunity to shake-down rider’s navigation tech and a demonstration of VIME roadbook style.

Route profile:

Three, day-long navigation routes follow covering (some of) the mountains, rivers and lakes of the north-east corner of Vancouver island. Taken together, all five routes cover more than 800Km with less than 80Km of tarmac route liaison.

There are two classes of participation, a (road-legal) competitive moto-TSD class and a more relaxed GPS map app “navigation” class. The format of the event is specifically aimed at casual, grassroots motorcycle enthusiasts as there is no requirement for specially prepared motorcycles or navigation-tech. The event can be successfully ridden using smartphone apps.

Adjacent to the Sayward Valley Resort is The Crossroads pub and restaurant www.thecrossroadsrestaurant.ca to take care of your apres-ski requirements and the co-op convenience store and petrol station (ante-ski requirements?). The Sayward Valley resort also has a convenience and liquor store (?off-licence or grog-shop for foriegners?)…
