Yes, we had a result, but more of that in a little while….
After four wet days, of varying moistness, Sunday dawned bright, blue and breezy. A further two hundred and ten kilometres lay in wait for our intrepid riders from Washington state, the lower mainland, Sunshine Coast and the Island.
The route returned the riders to Woss by yet another route comprising a mixture of FSR mains, double-track equivalents and leafy/stony/steep trails (classified as public highways…).
At this point in the tale of the trails, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dominic Hickman and Mike O’Grady for their assistance in putting the show on, the owners of The Shot In The Dark cafe in Woss who opened specially on Sunday lunchtime to feed us and most importantly Faith and Frank, owners of the Sayward Valley Resort, a most excellent venue for your next adventure of a day, a week or a fortnight.
The return journey had been carefully planned to present the most spectacular scenery on Vancouver Island. The Schöen Lake loop and the views over the Johnstone Strait from the heights of Newcastle Ridge. The glorious summer sunshine plus gin-clear air gave all riders lasting memories of the natural beauty of Vancouver Island.
If you would like to try these routes for yourself they are at the end of this writeup.
The overnight leading trio of Marshall Jankovsky (1st), JP Tondreau (2nd) and Stan Shingler (3rd) lined up for their respective starts in the welcome sunshine, aware that one navigation error would rearrange their order.
Lunchtime at The Shot In The Dark cafe included many conversations about how the scores were developing. JP observed how a end-of-route leg score had crept into his morning tally and raised a concern that his overall score would be compromised. Having a good understanding of how Richta works, it was easy to develop a workaround that preserved his morning score and cleared the tables for his afternoon effort.
The afternoon return route had been constructed as the Grande Finale and so it turned out. While those at the head of the field were “pressing on “, those elsewhere were taking a more leisurely approach and soaking in the scenery.
Back at the campsite, the scoresheets were assembled into the results for the presentation of the trophies.
In first place, Marshall Jankovsky, a newcomer to moto-TSD from Seattle.
In second place, JP Tondreau, Squamish, a returner to VIME events
In third place, Stan Shingler, also a moto-TSD newcomer, he of the flat front tyre saga from Thursday evening. from Cultus Lake Lower Mainland.
The final results table looks like this after 84 timed legs
Marshall Jankovsky
2373
JP Trondeau
2962
Stanley Shingler
4436
Peter Francis
14519
Matt Cooper
24264
Sol Hutson
24408
As the event organiser, I am impressed by the improvement in TSD accuracy riders are returning. Zero time difference scores are now beginning to appear in the results, over 10km backcountry legs, riding solo.

The Vancouver Island Motosports Events (ie me, Jonathan Binnington) proudly
presents the routes for the 2026 Great Canadian (motorcycle) Roadbook Rally.
Rally Roadbook Reader.
Download RRR app onto your device that will display your roadbook. You will probably
(most certainly) have to arrange for a USB charger to keep that device charged up.
These routes are presented as PDFs from my Dropbox account. You need to open
each of the PDFs and save them to your device.
