Entries are open and invited for the fourth summer roadbook rally presented by Vancouver Island Motosports Events. A Canadian event, by Canadians in Canada on Canada Day weekend. Other nationalities are most welcome to join. Provided your motoring documentation is fully in order in your home jurisdiction, you will be legal in BC.
The event is run over gravel mountain roads in the mountains of the north of Vancouver Island. These roads are designated as public highways and the motoring laws of BC permit “navigation trials” under the clauses of motoring law and ICBC insurance, provided the motoring laws are not broken and all participants are registered, licenced and insured.
This permission enables rally roadbook “navigation trials” over the old (100 years in some cases) mountain roads that were once used to exploit the forests of Vancouver Island. The roads are as testing as amateur DS and Adv riders can expect to manage, the routes are marathon distances (200-300km per day) with a cafe breakfast at the start, pub lunch and fuel at midday and a pub-restaurant at the finish.
There are three classes for the three day event, navigation by Gaia, navigation by roadbook and if you wish to compete, navigation by roadbook with GPS timing. All classes complete the same route, with bypasses for the Gaia class of the most testing sections.
The event is designed to meet the needs of riders who are relatively new to backcountry travel while also meeting the needs of riders who are developing their roadbook navigation skills and also providing a road-legal competition format for riders who would like to experience motorcycle rallysport without committing a substantial amount of money.
The event outline is to arrive at the bivouac on Friday afternoon 27 June for sign-on (extended to Saturday morning for late arrivals), ride routes on Saturday, Sunday and Monday with awards and results on Monday afternoon. Then either head for the ferries late on Monday night or on Tuesday morning (Canada Day).
Don’t forget to book your ferry crossings with BCFerries…
